Makdum’s Family holds strong position in Rahimyar Khan. In 2002 elections, sitting Governor Punjab Makdum Ahmed Mehmood, was unable to contest from his home constituency as he was District Nazim of Rahim Yar Khan at that time, he gifted his NA seat to his brother in law Jehangir Tareen, who won the seat twice in 2002 and 2008 elections. Currently Mr. Tareen is in PTI and contesting from Lodhran.

Ghulam Ahmed Bilour of ANP has won general elections four times and bye polls once from NA-1 Peshawar. Interestingly, he has also lost polls twice from this constituency. In 1990, Ghulam Bilour defeated PPP leader Benazir Bhutto with a huge margin of more than 13,000 votes.
NA-1 Peshawar is the first constituency of NA and holds equally prime significance. Several candidates from outside of this constituency have tried their luck but could not achieve success. AM (R) Asghar Khan attempted in 1977, and Benazir Bhutto in 1990 but both of them failed to win polls from here. And now in 2013, Imran Khan has decided to contest elections from NA-1 Peshawar.
